Fostering’s Impact on Adult Relationships

The Challenges of Raising Children Not Yours by Birth
Presented by Debra Wiegel, MFT
Being a foster parent takes a great deal of commitment, time, and energy from you – the primary caregiver. When you are looking after a child from foster care, it is 24 hours a day, every day, every week, every month, and it can be a time consumer and leave little opportunity to include refueling activities for you, or time for your spouse or partner. At the same time, if you are like me, your relationship to your spouse or partner is vitally important. The last thing we want is that fostering divides the adults in a household or leaves a loved one feeling abandoned. Having a dependent child come into our homes, certainly takes time, as there is court, doctor, school, therapy, and other necessary appointments. If we aren’t careful, it may come to feel like you are making too many sacrifices in your life. Our goal is to have an open conversation to address the importance of balancing your daily life, making time for yourself, your significant others, and not neglecting your important adult relationships. We want this class to be a gift to yourself.
