Reaching Hearts: Understanding the 5 Love Languages in Resource Care

Presented by, Judy Osterhage, PhD., Parenting Specialist
Please register in advance for this meeting.
This training introduces resource parents to the concept of the Five Love Languages and how they can be used to build stronger, more trusting relationships with children in care. Many children who have experienced trauma, loss, or disrupted attachments may express and receive love in unique or unexpected ways. Understanding these differences can help caregivers respond more effectively and compassionately.
Participants will explore the five love languages:
- Words of Affirmation – using positive language, praise, and encouragement
- Acts of Service – showing care through helpful actions and support
- Receiving Gifts – giving meaningful items that communicate thoughtfulness and value
- Quality Time – offering focused, undivided attention and shared experiences
- Physical Touch – appropriate, safe physical connection such as hugs or high-fives
The class will also examine how trauma can impact a child’s ability to trust, connect, and interpret affection. Caregivers will learn practical strategies to identify a child’s primary love language, avoid common misinterpretations of behavior, and intentionally use love languages to promote emotional safety, attachment, and resilience.
