Shame as an Aftermath of Early Adversity & Trauma (In-person)

This class explores how experiences of early adversity and trauma can lead to deep feelings of shame that shape a child’s sense of self and behavior. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how shame differs from guilt, how it develops in response to neglect, abuse, and attachment disruptions, and how it manifests in children and youth placed in foster or adoptive care. Through discussion, examples, and reflective exercises, foster and resource parents will learn strategies to identify shame-based reactions and respond in ways that promote safety, connection, and healing. The training emphasizes trauma-informed and attachment-based approaches to help children rebuild trust, develop positive self-worth, and form secure relationships.
