Are you a current Yolo foster youth, former foster youth, or homeless youth? Are you moving into transitional housing or moving into an apartment on your own or with roommates? You can get help from Make It Happen Yolo (MIH), a FREE service that provides a wide assortment of household goods and gently used furniture to turn your empty apartment into a home.
What FREE furnishings can I typically get?
- Living room sofa and chairs, coffee table
- Dining table and chairs
- Desk and chair
- Bedroom furniture and a new mattress
- Bathroom supplies – shower curtain, towels, bathmats, waste basket
- Kitchen supplies – pots and pans, baking pans, pot holders, utensils, plates and glasses, food storage containers, waste basket
- Appliances – microwave, blender, toaster, coffee maker, iron
- Cleaning supplies – broom and dustpan, vacuum cleaner, mop, cleaning cloths
How do I apply?
You need to be referred to MIH by a social worker, ILP staff, school counselor, or another organization working with foster youth (or other youth in need). Referrals can be made either by phone at 530-341-2431 or email info@MIHyolo.org
Who can get this free service?
Foster youth or former foster youth ages 16 to 24 who are moving into an apartment on their own or with roommates, including:
- Current Yolo County Foster youth living independently within or outside of Yolo County
- Former Yolo County Foster youth in need and referred by a partner organization
- College students who are current or former foster youth (from any area) living in Yolo County and are participating a foster youth support program such as: the Guardian Scholars Program (UC Davis), the Nextup Program (Sacramento City College & Woodland Community College), or the Guardian Scholars Program (Sacramento State)
How does this work?
MIH will help you select what items you need from a checklist and then meet with you to pick out specific items and furniture at the MIH storage area, or will make the selections for you if requested. Storage units are located in Davis, CA.
How will I move all these furnishings to my new apartment?
MIH can transport your new furnishings and furniture to your new apartment within the Yolo County area.
