In the THP-NMD program you can live on your own while in extended foster care in transitional housing or commercial apartments. Yolo County pays your rent (up to $1650 per month) directly to the apartment. Yolo County contracts with several agencies to work closely with you. You will work with a caseworker to pick the apartment. If your rent is less than $1650 a month, you will receive a check for the price difference each month.
In the SILP program foster youth can live in other settings such as renting a room from a relative, sharing an apartment with roommates, or a college dorm while receiving a monthly payment. You will find your own preferred housing option. The county will pay you a stipend $1,258 per month and you will pay your rent.
If you are over 21, Yolo County has a very limited number of spaces in the Yolo Transitional Age Youth housing program. This is a County-designed program using general TAY or local funds – NOT a foster placement. In this program, the Yolo County pays your rent (up to $1800 per month) directly to the apartment. Yolo County contracts with several agencies to have caseworker work closely with you. This program can serve youth for three years who are ages 18 to up to 24. (Once you turn 25 you are no longer eligible).
How do I apply?
Ask your Yolo County social worker to get referred to the transitional housing program THP-NMD (Transitional Housing Placement for Non-minor Dependents) or be assessed for a supportive independent living plan (SILP) .
Who qualifies?
You must be a Yolo County Foster Youth, ages, 18 to 21 in extended foster care. You must be employed or enrolled in college or a trade school.
